Our customer is a manufacturer of high-end kitchen faucets. Its pull-down models had a problem that users notice immediately: the spray head did not pull out easily and did not always retract properly. The springs had lost flexibility, retraction was weak, and they did not last, which led to complaints.
The Problem
The earlier pull-down springs had a retraction failure rate of 15% after 5,000 cycles of use. Our goal was to bring that below 5% and to make the movement smoother at the same time.
Requirements
- Reliability: at least 20,000 cycles of use without loss of function.
- Working environment: the changing water temperatures and pressures of a kitchen.
- Flexibility: the spring had to extend by up to 60% of its length without permanent deformation.
- Appearance: resistance to water stains and mineral buildup.
Our Solution
Material
We chose AISI 302 stainless steel for its high tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It copes with different water conditions and with the frequent use a kitchen faucet gets every day.
Design
The coil spacing was designed so that tension is distributed evenly along the spring, which keeps the pull smooth from start to finish. The ends were shaped to anchor securely and fit cleanly into the faucet mechanism. The force was tuned so the spray head is easy to pull down and still retracts reliably when released.
Surface Treatment
The springs were electropolished for a smooth surface and then given a clear nano-coating that resists stains. A smoother surface gives minerals less to hold on to, so the spring stays clean for longer.
Results
- The retraction failure rate came down to 3% after 20,000 cycles, compared with 15% after 5,000 cycles before.
- Users reported that the faucet was easier and smoother to operate.
What This Project Shows
A faucet spring is used many times a day in a wet environment. It has to stay reliable and it has to stay clean. Stainless steel with the right surface finish does both, and a design that balances easy pull-down against firm retraction is what the user actually feels.
